1st GRADE PROGRAM
Our first grade students enjoy coming to the library each week to check out a library book for free reading. Students learn appropriate behavior, listening skills, rules for discussion, as well as parts of a book, book care, and beginning genres.
Quarter 1 Learning Targets:
Identify the librarian by name
Identify library rules and expectations
Define and explore key library terms and terminology
Identify and explain parts of a book
Understand differences between fiction/nonfiction
Identify and use text features to locate information
Identify circulation policies and procedures
Identify book care expectations
Independently locate and checkout a library book
Quarter 2 Learning Targets:
Arrange words in alphabetical order to the second letter
Discern that nonfiction/informational text are a source of information
Utilize magazines to answer questions
Arrange words in alphabetical order by first letter
Understand a dictionary explains unknown words
Understand a dictionary is organized in alphabetical order
Realize the internet is a source of information but must be used carefully when looking for information
Answer text-based questions about stories
Quarter 3 Learning Targets
Define nonfiction
Be aware that nonfiction materials can be used to locate information
Identify the following parts of an nonfiction informational text:
Table of contents, Index, Glossary, Bibliography, Headings, Subheadings
Begin to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction
Compare and contrast nonfiction and fiction through simple self-read texts as well as more complex read-alouds
Show an understanding that nonfiction is grouped by subject
Retell information heard and read from nonfiction books
Answer text-based questions about the information heard and read in nonfiction books
Summarize and organize information using graphic organizers
Quarter 4 Learning Targets
Identify the locations in the library where Fiction and Easy books are located.
Explain the responsibility of the author and illustrator
Identify the title and author; locate the title and author on the front of a book
Listen to stories and identify story elements: setting, character, beginning, middle, end
Explore poetry
Compare and contrast literature in written form to visual or oral adaptation
